The Finance Discipline of Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, established in 1951，is one of the earliest finance majors established in China, and also the earliest financial talent training base established in New China. Undergraduate enrollment began in 1960. In 1994, it obtained the right to confer a master's degree. In 1999, it was approved as a provincial key construction discipline. In 2005, it was awarded the Undergraduate Branded Major of Shanxi Province's Ordinary Colleges and Universities. In 2006, it obtained the right to confer a doctoral degree. In 2007, it was approved as a provincial key discipline and the national first batch of Characteristic Major Construction Point of Colleges and Universities. Finance was the backbone of Shanxi Province’s "1331" Engineering Advantage and Characteristic Disciplines, and one of the core disciplines of Shanxi Province’s "Transitional Economics Discipline Group", with post-doctoral scientific research stations. Finance was supported by the Shanxi Provincial Colleges and Universities Advantage Major Construction Project Support Plan (2016), and was the first batch of Comprehensive Reform Pilot of Undergraduate Majors of Local Colleges and Universities, the Advantageous Major of Colleges and Universities of Shanxi Province and the Undergraduate Branded Major of Ordinary Colleges and Universities of Shanxi Province. “The‘3+3’ Talent Training Mode Innovation Experimental Area”of Finance major was the “Talent Training Mode Innovation Experimental Area of Ordinary Institutions of Higher Learning of Shanxi Province”. In 2019, it obtained the National Construction Point of First-class Undergraduate Majors.

After a long period of meticulous training and practice of teaching and scientific research, a batch of experts and scholars who enjoy a wide range of influence in the country have emerged in the finance discipline, creating a group of academic leaders with a higher academic level and greater development potential, and forming a young and strong academic echelon with reasonable structure. There are currently 41 teachers in finance, including 7 professors and 20 associate professors. Teachers with Senior Vice Title and above account for 65.9% of the total number of teachers. There are 24 doctors, 15 masters. The teachers with a master's degree or above account for 95.1%. There are 3 doctoral supervisors, 21 master supervisors. The team of financial supervisors was selected as the first Outstanding Supervisor Team for Postgraduate Education in Shanxi Province in 2007 .

Focusing on the frontiers of discipline development and the major concerns of provincial economic development, the finance has successively established financial laboratories and financial evaluation and assessment laboratories. It has gathered a group of young academic backbones with high academic level and great development potential, forming a young and strong discipline team with reasonable structure. The backbones of the team include 1 Outstanding Young Academic Leader in Shanxi’s colleges and universities, 1 in the 1331 Talent Project in Shanxi Province, and 1 Top-notch Talent in Shanxi Province's "Three Jin Talents" Support Program. The trend of youth and doctoralization in research teams continues to be strengthened. There are 13 young researchers under the age of 45, accounting for 31.7% of the discipline team. Finance is currently the only discipline unit in Shanxi Province that has a complete bachelor-master-doctor-postdoctoral training level. The Master of Insurance fills the gap in the training of high-level insurance professionals in Shanxi colleges and universities. It has owned the only key research base of humanities and social sciences of finance of Shanxi Province’s colleges and universities, and has established the only high-end financial think tank in Shanxi Province.

In recent years, the finance discipline team has undertaken and completed the major bidding projects of the Shanxi Provincial Government, the projects in the 13th Five-Year Plan and the 14th Five-Year Plan of Shanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the municipal development and reform bureaus, and projects commissioned by the Shanxi Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, projects commissioned by relevant departments and bureaus, and projects commissioned by various types of financial institutions. It has provided important consultation and decision-making suggestions for local economic construction and industry development.

Finance disciplines have long adhered to the concept of open education, maintained close ties with universities in the province, maintained long-term and stable academic exchange channels with well-known domestic universities, and established long-term cooperative relationships with counterparts in the financial field and related disciplines at home and abroad. And it actively has organized and hosted important international and domestic academic conferences.

Based in Shanxi and facing the whole country, the finance discipline has constructed a theoretical research framework of financial resources with financial resources as the research object, and formed a complete theoretical system of financial innovation and risk management in commercial banks. It has made important contributions to promoting the theoretical development of finance discipline, China’s economic reform and local construction.
